Scientists are currently debating how many species and subspecies of giraffes there are, but new evidence suggests that there may be 4 species (and 7 subspecies). 

The tools that scientists use to understand if animals are different species include DNA, phenotype (appearance) and reproductive behaviour. New DNA evidence which has come to light on giraffes has generated this debate
