Machair

Machair is Gaelic for this unique habitat, which is highly diverse but is at risk to climate change and modern agricultural practices. It is a rare, fertile, low-lying grassy plain habitat found only on the western coasts of Scotland and Ireland, formed by wind-blown, shell-rich sand. It is known for its flower-rich meadows, but also includes agricultural land and changes from dunes, to lochs, and to bogs.
