The Modern Zoo

"How have zoos changed in your lifetime? Can you think about what makes a modern zoo?"

A great deal of planning goes into developing an animal collection and their enclosures. Many people are involved in the welfare of animals in captivity, not just zookeepers! Contractors like architects and designers are hired and the knowledge of many zoo staff is also called upon. These may include education officers, horticulturists (plant experts), maintenance staff and graphic designers to name a few.
A modern zoo may want to have naturalistic enclosures that encourage animals to behave as they would in the wild. However, it is almost impossible to completely recreate a natural habitat and compromises have to be made.

A historical enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo was Brilliant Birds - have a look at this enclosure in the video below!

Brilliant Birds has now evolved into the new home to our pair of Linne’s two-toed sloths in the new Sloths and Armadillos building. Zoos are constantly evaluating enclosures to ensure that they meet the needs of the animals in their care - Click on the film below have a look at how the space has changed in the clip below.

Factors related to public viewing, safety, information, safe and easy access for keepers and maintenance staff, funding (sponsorship, donations, etc.) are also a major consideration when designing a modern enclosure.

What is most important is that all these considerations do not affect the overall welfare of the animals.

  • Is this good welfare?
  • How could this affect the animals?
  • How does this make you feel?
  • Do zoos have a future?
