What is an application form?

I have never completed an application form, what do I have to do?

Talking to the publicYou have seen a job at a zoo that sparks your attention, so the first thing to do is to complete an application form! But what does that entail?

An application form is an official way to apply for a job, course or other formal opportunity with a company. You should use an application form to show why you would be a good choice for the company.

It can become quite tedious having to write out the same information for each job application, so try and make it easy for yourself by having your own master document / CV, where you have all your details that you can tailor to each role.

These days applications are mainly done online, particularly for the big business or companies. So make sure that you make a copy of all your details. Don't fall into the trap of assuming all job applications are the same. Adapt your application form and CV specifically to the jobs you are applying for.

RZSS Job OpportunitiesThe application form allows the employer to gather information about the employee. The employer uses the Supporting Statement to ascertain who is the best applicant, and a written application may often be followed by an invite to interview. Review each Role Profile carefully to guide you in providing the appropriate details in your application. The employers are looking for evidence that you have the skills, knowledge, experience and competence required for the role, along with the personal attributes, behaviours and commitment to fully engage in their work. This is also where you can  comment on why you are interested in working for the employer.

Your next task: Answer the questions below as if you are completing the supporting statement section, but remember... don't waffle. Certain sections may be restricted by a word count. When  you are making a statement e.g. I have a part-time job, make sure you give clear details about the role and your responsibilities and break-down the skills that you have learnt form the position. This demonstrates to the potential employer your depth of knowledge and relevant experience.
